Inthe era of COVID-19 our globalised world has suddenly become much more local,with opportunities for communication and interaction that we recently took forgranted now becoming much more difficult, or impossible, to arrange. Evenpost-pandemic, with the global economic down turn already having a severe affect,it is unlikely that business travel, conferences, or even regular face-to-face meetings, will return to their former levels quickly, if ever.

Whilst teleconferencing technology offers great scope to transmit information visuallyand orally, the field of written transmission, especially at a time when regular communication has been disrupted, remains of crucial importance. Emails remain an essential medium for business in many areas, such as for reports, tenders, proposals, and legal and financial documents - all forms of information that cannot just be exchanged verbally, and which require a written record.

The ability to write truly effective emails is an acquired skill, but to be able todo so professionally in a foreign language is even more challenging. As China has opened up ever more to the outside world, the need for business emails written in English has been increasing all the time. Unfortunately, the employees of many companies in China are not keeping up with this demand, and Chinese business is suffering as a consequence. The ability to write clear, concise business emails in English is more important than ever before.

When Chinese companies offer training to their staff for business emails in English,they usually, unwittingly, do themselves a great disservice by engaging a foreign teacher, usually with some form of TESOL qualification, to deliver th ecourse. Whilst an English language teacher can certainly cover areas such as vocabulary, grammar, and syntax, many have little, or no, actual experience ofthe wider business world and are, therefore, unable to offer meaningful solutions for the deeper issues involved in email writing – only those experienced in business can effectively train in it.
